The role of the Board of Directors is to ensure that Football South Australia has a secure long-term future by establishing the organisation’s strategic direction and priorities.
This includes defining key relationships between the organisation and its stakeholders and other key individuals and organisations/groups.
The board have the role of establishing the policy framework for governing the organisation, from which all operational policies and actions are developed.
President – Sam Ciccarello
Sam joined the Board in May 2013. Sam has had a lifelong passion for football and wants to contribute to the on-going well-being, vitality, and progress of football in our community.
Sam has extensive leadership experience in senior management, marketing, and major events in the public and business sectors. Positions held by Sam include: CEO of Adelaide United Football Club, GM of Southern Cross Austereo (SA), Event Director and Chief Operating Officer for the Sydney Olympic Games Organising Committee’s SA operations, Chief Executive Officer of Australian Major Events, CCM Australian Moto GP (Sydney); and Marketing Manager and subsequently, Chief Executive Officer with the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. Sam is a Panel Judge since 2011 with the Telstra Business Awards; Director on the SA Government’s Motor Sport Board, Member, Director Australian Masters Games, Board Member, Special Olympics SA, Whitelion Leadership Advisory Group, Director Australian LeisureCo, Chairman of the St. George Historical and Cultural Committee and former seven year association with the Arts, as Board Director Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Foundation.
With Strong networks throughout business and government sectors. Sam is principal of consultancy firm, SMC Management, which provides corporate business advisory services, specialising in organisational performance, change management, strategy, CEO/executive coaching, and negotiation, conflict resolution and facilitation.
Vice President – Dr Jane Rathjen
Dr. Jane Rathjen has been a director of Football SA since 2018. She is a member of the Governance Committee, and Finance Committee.
Dr. Rathjen joins the Football SA Board with a wealth of football knowledge having played the game for more than 25 years as well as coaching and volunteering on club committees.
Jane has been Chair of the Football SA Women’s Advisory Group for 10 years. Over this time, Jane has overseen the embedding of the Women’s and Girl’s competition within the Football SA structure, with an increase in participation and establishment of the licensing structure for the Women’s National Premier League.
Director – Wendy Barry
Wendy Barry has been a director of Football SA since 2013 and is Chair of the Governance Committee. She is a former director of Palliative Council SA and Trustee of Bone Growth Foundation.
Wendy is a Partner at the law firm, Tindall Gask Bentley, and is an accredited family law specialist and collaborative lawyer.
Wendy’s interest in football evolved over years on the sidelines watching her two children playing at school, club, and representative level. The satisfaction and joy they got out of playing is what encourages her to give back to the game by way of serving on the board of the Football SA.
Director – Orazio Di Carlo
Orazio is a Director on the Football South Australia Board and also a Life Member of the South Australian Soccer Federation, Adelaide United Football Club and Campbelltown City Soccer & Social Club.
He was Commissioner of the South Australian Soccer Federation for 13 years as well as being Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of Campbelltown City Soccer and Social Club and was also previously Chair of the Football SA Hall of Fame Honours Committee.
Orazio is married with two children and currently sits as the Chair of the Adelaide United Football Club’s History Committee aside being Chairperson of the St. Hilarion Aged Care Board.
Professionally, he is a private consultant in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management and has held such positions as Acting General Manager Human Resources at the Central Aboriginal Congress, Acting CEO of United Way SA, Manager of Employee Relations & Adelaide Office Manager at Forestry SA and a Team Leader & Senior Consultant at SA Health.
Director - Joe Franco
Joe has been involved in Australian Soccer for over 40 years as a player, a coach and administrator.
Joe is the Director & Proprietor of his own accounting practice and is also the Director in Direct Fire. Joe has substantial property development experience which has been gained over 15 years, and acts as a specialist advisor in taxation to a national property group, Positive Real Estate.
Joe’s qualifications include a Degree in Bachelor of Business from the Charles Sturt University of NSW and Associate Diploma in Business. Joe is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants (FIPA) and Institute of Taxation of Australia (CTA) and Member of the National Institute of Tax Agents of Australia (NTAA) and the Tax Practitioners of Australia (Registered Tax Agent).
Joe is married with two daughters and is interested in all sports but of course mainly football. Joe is an avid movie goer and reader. He has a great love of music and has performed with various Rock Bands as a singer.
Director – David Hewitson
David has been a Board Member for from 2005 – 2014 and from 2016 to present day.
He was inducted to the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2014 and is a Life Member of Football SA as well as the South Australian Junior Soccer Association and the Noarlunga Districts Junior Soccer Association, having being associated with the game for over 30 years.
David is a part of various Football SA Committees including Football SA Museum Committee, Life Membership Advisory Committee, the Project Control Group Committee, and the Junior Committee.
He is married with three sons and the owner of Mobile Blinds which has serviced the south of Adelaide for 25 years.
Director – David Pollock
David has been a Director with Football South Australia since 2016.
A proud family history playing at local and international levels both in Australia and the United Kingdom has drawn David into the sport and he is now a passionate advocate for the future development of the game.
David has been a Chief Executive for varying companies for 15 years and he is now the Global Chief Executive of a multi-national company with operations in Australia, Asia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
David’s qualifications include a Masters in Business Administration from Canberra University, a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Monash University as well as an Advanced Certificate in Managing Social and Community Services. David has served on a wide number of Boards during his career and was admitted as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. More recently David accepted a role as a Judge for the 2017 Telstra Business Women’s Awards where he is proud to play a role in recognising outstanding businesswomen.
Director – Tony Taormina
Tony has been involved in Australian Soccer as a player from the age of 12, as an Administrator for more than 20 years and spent a lifetime as a passionate supporter of the game.
He was one of the founding members of NE MetroStars Soccer Club Inc and served 20 years as Chairman and President. During this time, he facilitated all aspects of club growth, including the implementation of two major business growth phases, a building facility redevelopment, forged and nurtured key relationships with stakeholders, local, state and federal peak bodies and Government.
Professionally, Tony has over 30 years of accounting and taxation advisory experience including senior roles with Price Waterhouse, the ATO and 18 years in public practice.
Tony is currently a director and shareholder of Caveo Partners, a professional integrated accounting, financial planning, and finance business advisory practice employing 35 staff. Responsibilities include managing the tax and accounting division of Caveo Partners predominantly focused on providing high level business and tax advice to business owners, family groups, professionals, and high net worth individuals. Tony is also responsible for developing their business strategy and vision.
Tony is married with 2 adult children, have a wonderful and close extended family, he is a keen cyclist, relaxes by walking, fishing, and reading, loves travelling and enjoys good food and wine.
Director – Kristyn Swaffer
Kristyn Swaffer was a member of the National Women’s Team (The Matildas), inducted to the Football SA Hall of Fame and Football SA Player Life member.
Kristyn has been involved with football as a player for Australia at a senior level (including 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup in USA) and has represented Australia at Junior and National Team Youth Levels. Kristyn was selected in the SAWSA All Stars team on 4 separate occasions. She has played W-League with Adelaide United FC, and local club football.
Not only has Kristyn the experience and knowledge in Women’s Football but has a Bachelor of Science (Resource and Environment Management) working for the Primary Industries and Regions SA. The responsibilities include managing high level relationships and negotiations with government and industry stakeholders to ensure effective development polity outcomes, as well as providing leadership and management to the Regional Strategy & Programs team and strategic support to the Director. Kristyn has served on a number of government and department policy and governance committees, including Risk & Audit, Strategy, and Agency and Intergovernmental Relationships.
