Double Delight for Liberia at RAA African Nations Cup

Friday 4 October saw the annual RAA African Nations Cup successfully kick-off, which ran across the entire October long weekend, with the winners crowned on Monday.

More than 500 participants and 3000 spectators converged upon VALO Football Centre in Angle Park to witness 20 men’s and 5 women’s teams proudly represent African nations in the tournament.

For the fourth consecutive year, RAA featured as naming rights partner of the event, with the RAA activation zone providing spectators some added entertainment on the final day.

The Women’s tournament was dominated by South Sudan, who went into the Finals with 15 points. The Women’s Golden Boot was awarded to Liberia’s Margarita Fitzharris, who scored 5 goals throughout the competition, and Women’s Player of the Tournament was awarded to South Sudan’s Adhour Kuol for an outstanding performance.

Heading into the Grand Final, South Sudan were the favourites, however Liberia dominated the field with a 3-0 win to claim the title. Liberia’s Kim Tran was leading goal scorer for the game, contributing 2 goals to her team’s scoresheet.

The Men’s competition saw the top two teams from each group progress into the quarter-finals. 2018 Grand Finalists Sierra Leone and Guinea were unable to repeat the same form they poised last year, having both been knocked out in the quarter finals.

South Sudan dominated the competition with 26 goals, with Liberia and Burundi following closely behind with 24 and 22 goals respectively. South Sudan’s Benny Karpoleh was awarded Men’s Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Liberia’s Mamadi Kamara was awarded the Men’s Player of the Tournament, and South Sudan’s Ayom Ayom Majok was the leading goal scorer of the competition, netting 9 goals across 7 games.

The battle for the men’s Grand Final saw Liberia take on, and defeat, South Sudan in a 4-3 win. Liberia’s Teeboy Kamara was leading goal scorer for the game, netting 2 for his side.
