Campbelltown City SC have been crowned the National Premier Leagues (NPL) 2018 Champions after defeating Lions FC (QLD) 2-1 in a thrilling contest at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre in South Australia today.
Campbelltown City SC scored twice in the first half courtesy of a double from Anthony Ture in the 5th minute and 32nd minute. Lions FC pegged one back after the break with a sumptuous effort from Andrew Thompson in the 49th minute. Lions FC then pushed hard for the remainder of the match but could not find an equaliser which gave Campbelltown their first ever NPL Championship.
Anthony Ture from Campbelltown City also received the John Kosmina Medal for the player of the NPL Grand Final.
As a result of their historic victory, Campbelltown City SC will also receive automatic entry into the FFA Cup 2019 Final Rounds.
The NPL Finals Series brings together the eight teams who finished top of their respective NPL standings at the end of their regular seasons to determine Australia’s best NPL side.
2018 marks the sixth edition of the NPL Finals Series, which was last year won by Heidelberg United FC. Sydney United 58 FC won the inaugural competition in 2013 and in 2016, while MetroStars SC from South Australia (2014) and Blacktown City FC from New South Wales (2015) have also been crowned Champions of the series in the past.
