A feast of Saturday arvo Football in store for Round 17 in the NPLSA

ROUND 17

Croydon Kings vs Modbury Jets
Venue: Jack Smith Park
Date: Saturday 11 July 2:30 PM

The Jets will be looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they face the Kings on Saturday afternoon at Jack Smith Park, who themselves were left smarting after missing the opportunity to restart the season with a win.

A 2-4 home defeat to Raiders saw the newly promoted Jets surrender top spot on the NPLSA ladder, ending a dream start to life in the top division.

Meanwhile, late drama last Friday night saw the Kings take the lead in the 88th minute through substitute Patrick Caraccia, only for the winless Blue Eagles to level the scores with a 93rd-minute penalty in a 3-3 draw.

The draw, their third in the first five rounds, leaves them in eighth place at this early point of the season and seeking to atone for the two points dropped last week.

Raiders vs Adelaide Olympic
Venue: Croatian Sports Centre
Date: Saturday 11 July 3:00 PM

Raiders will be looking to build on the strong form that saw them dethrone the ladder leaders on their own turf in their match against an in-form Adelaide Olympic at the Croatian Sports Centre on Saturday.

The Raiders hit four past the Jets in a commanding display, tripling their season goal tally after only scoring twice in the first four rounds, which lifts them up to sixth place.

Olympic routed struggling defending champions Campbelltown City 5-2 last week to leapfrog the Jets and Comets into second, level on points with first-placed MetroStars.

Fausto Erba looks to be a crucial man for Olympic, having netted his fourth and fifth goals of the campaign last week to sit equal second on the competition goalscoring charts and nearly match last season’s output after just five matches.

MATCH OF THE ROUND | Proudly brought to you by Ausco Modular
Adelaide Blue Eagles vs Adelaide Comets
Venue: Marden Sports Complex
Date: Saturday 11 July 3:00 PM

ABLvCOM

The Blue Eagles remain rooted to the bottom of the NPLSA table and are looking to turn their slow start around against the Comets.

The only side winless from their first five matches, the Blue Eagles snatched their second point of the season in a dramatic 3-3 draw against the Kings last week.

Meanwhile, the Comets kicked off the restarted 2020 season with a goal-fest against MetroStars, coming from 3-0 down at half-time to just fall short in an entertaining match that finished 5-4.

The two sides in this encounter are fighting two very different battles at this stage of the season: the Comets are looking to entrench themselves in the top half and prove themselves as a title threat, while the Blue Eagles are battling to kick-start their season at home this weekend.

Para Hills Knights vs MetroStars
Venue: The Paddocks
Date: Saturday 11 July 3 PM

MetroStars are aiming to continue their imperious form in the opening rounds against the struggling Knights, who find themselves on opposite ends of the table.

The away side displayed their firepower against fellow strong starters the Comets by netting five times thanks to forwards Joshua Mori (three) and Christian Esposito (two), who lead the goalscoring charts with five and six strikes respectively.

MetroStars have managed 16 goals so far this season with the two men leading the line, six more than anyone else in the competition.

The same cannot be said of the Knights, who are the competition’s lowest scorers with just five in the first five matches and have registered one win and four losses.

They will be hoping their relatively sound defensive record will be enough to keep out the firepower that MetroStars boast.

Para Hills Knights: 2. Ali Rayez Muradi, 4. Kieran Mcnally (C), 5. Tyson Herraman, 6. Mohamed Conneh, 7. Ethan Lekkas, 8. Franz Pjetri, 9. Luka Chikwuba, 10. Isaac Mullen, 11. Andrew Maio, 13. Campbelltown City vs Cumberland United
Venue: Steve Woodcock Sports Centre
Date: Saturday 11 July 6:30 PM

Both City and United are currently sitting at the wrong end of the table, with the match on Saturday night presenting a great opportunity for either side to chalk up a crucial victory.

The home side have had a shaky start to their title defence, with no wins and only four goals since their opening-round victory over fellow cellar-dweller Blue Eagles, and were hammered 5-2 by Olympic last weekend.

United grabbed their second win of the season in dramatic style last week, however, scoring four late goals (including a hat-trick by forward Thomas Briscoe) to squeeze past ten-man Adelaide United 4-3.

They will be looking to sure up their defence after conceding at a rate of over three goals a game to start the season, while City will be desperate to impact the scoreboard under lights at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre.
