Pontian Eagles SC joins State League Two

Football SA is pleased to announce that Pontian Eagles SC will join the State League 2 competition for the 2020 season in place of UniSA FC.

A one-year licence agreement has been signed by the club in-line with the current licence agreement with National Premier League, State League 1 and State League 2 clubs.

Pontian Eagles SC has been working closely with Football SA since its initial desire to join the competition in 2016. At that time, Pontian Eagles SC had only just secured the Yalumba Drive Reserve venue as its sole tenant and determined it needed further time to be ready to join the competition.

The Club has grown since 2016 and competed in the Sunday Premiers Division of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League (SAASL) last season, is more financially secure and has seen a growth in junior numbers.

Pontian Eagles SC President Terry Kalaitsidis stated that joining the Football SA Men’s competitions is the next step for the club.

“We initially expressed our desire to join the Football SA Men’s competitions in 2016, however with the club only just securing a new venue as the sole tenants, and in a transitional period, we realised we weren’t ready.

“The Club has grown since that time. We are more financially secure. We have cemented ourselves in the top two divisions of the Sunday SAASL competitions. This is now our next step.

“The Club, players and supporters are excited about this coming season and this next step we have taken.”

Football SA CEO, Michael Carter welcomed the introduction of Pontian Eagles SC.

“Football SA is very pleased to welcome an established club like Pontian Eagles SC into our competition. The Club has shown a level of maturity by withdrawing itself in 2016, to ensure it was ready both structurally and financially.”
