Campbelltown City recorded their third win in their last four outings with a 3-1 victory over top-six rivals South Adelaide.
The hosts got off to the perfect start as Trey Williams’ dinked ball into the area evaded the boot of the lurking Luigi Ditroia but sat up perfectly for Nicholas Francese, who thumped the ball first-time into the bottom corner to hand Campbelltown a seventh-minute lead.
South were up to the challenge, though, and levelled just before the break through Jai Conroy, who rifled his shot from six yards into the roof of the net after being teed up by Declan Gray from Alex Rideout’s deep cross.
Williams restored Campbelltown’s lead ten minutes after half-time when the ball fell in his lap from a Ditroia corner, instinctively stabbing home into the bottom corner through traffic to make it 2-1.
Alexander Mullen put the finishing touches on a hard-fought win by converting from the spot after Williams was scythed down in the penalty area, sealing all three points to send Campbelltown up to fourth on the ladder and push South out of the top half.
Adelaide Comets claimed an important 2-1 win at first-placed Adelaide City to move within two points of the top of the table and Croydon FC earned a crucial victory against Adelaide Croatia Raiders to open a four-point cushion over the bottom two.
Adelaide Blue Eagles kept their faint survival hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Cumberland United, while Sturt Lions drew 2-2 with MetroStars and Adelaide United’s match against Adelaide Olympic also finished all square.
