RAA NPLSA Goals Wrap | Round Eight

Words by Thomas Perrotta

In a weekend filled with goals, it was Adelaide United who stole the headlines with a 4-0 thrashing of ladder leaders Adelaide Comets on their own turf.

Heading into the match, Comets were enjoying a seven-match winning run, opening up a five-point lead at the top in the process, while the Young Reds had endured thirteen fixtures without a win.

It was not long before United had stamped their authority on the match, however, as goals from Daniel Bressan and Binyam Kebede in the space of five minutes left the hosts shellshocked.

Comets were unable to get on the scoresheet before half-time, but despite all their effort it was United who found the back of the net on 70 minutes thanks to a well-worked set piece on the edge of the area brilliantly converted by young Reds star Louis D’Arrigo.

The visitors were not done, as Keshav Shrestha slotted home in the penalty area deep into injury time to put the gloss on an incredible, drought-breaking win for his side.

United were not the only club to enjoy a fruitful match in front of goal, as third-placed MetroStars hit five past second-placed Campbelltown City to leapfrog their opponents and close the gap on Comets to three points.

Modbury Jets also ended a months-long dry spell on the weekend with an emphatic 4-2 victory at Adelaide Olympic, their first since the resumption of the season, which saw them reduce the deficit on their opponents to three points.

Croydon Kings boosted their finals hopes with a 4-1 win away from home against Cumberland United, while Adelaide City and Raiders, alongside Para Hills Knights and Adelaide Blue Eagles, shared the spoils at 1-1.
