SA trio selected to join Westfield Young Matildas

Football Federation SA is delighted to learn that 3 SA born players have been named by Head Coach Leah Blayney in a 24-player squad for a training camp in Sydney as Australia prepares to compete at the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in Thailand.

Charlotte Grant, Emily Hodgson and Evelyn Goldsmith have been selected to join the group.

Next month the Westfield Young Matildas will travel to Chonburi where they will compete in Group A of the continental Championship against the host nation, DPR Korea, and Vietnam.

The Westfield Young Matildas will be seeking to secure a top-three finish at the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in order to seal one of Asia’s three qualification slots for the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Australia will hold three domestic training camps in quick succession before traveling to Thailand on Monday, 21 October 2019.

The Westfield Young Matildas will then spend a week acclimatising in Chonburi, before taking on DPR Korea in the team’s first Group A game on Sunday, 27 October 2019.

Additional pool fixtures against Thailand and Vietnam will be held on October 30 and November 2 respectively.

“I am looking forward to getting this group of players into camp in early October as we ramp up our preparations for the forthcoming AFC U-19 Women’s Championship,” Blayney said.

“While I am fortunate to work with many players in the squad with the Future Matildas program in Sydney, there are numerous players who will be joining us from other clubs and programs, so I am excited to see how all the players and staff gel together.”

The 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship will be held between Sunday, 27 October 2019 to Saturday, 9 November 2019.
