Tight at the top as WNPL heads into Round Five

round 5

Metro United WFC vs West Adelaide
Venue: Valo Football Centre
Date: Friday 10 July 6:15 PM

Both Metro and West will be looking to continue their strong starts to the season in a top of the table clash under lights at Valo Football Centre.

Despite each side boasting three wins and one loss in the opening four rounds of the season, West Adelaide have been the more productive in front of goal with 14 goals and just two conceded.

Georgia Macri’s fourth strike of the season was enough to get them over the line against a winless Uni, marking their first victory without a glut of goals (8-0 vs Fulham and 5-1 vs Comets).

In contrast, all of Metro’s wins have been by a one-goal margin, with the now-injured Chrissy Panagaris responsible for two of the team’s six goals.

Both sides will have to be on top form tonight, with Panagaris’ absence providing a selection headache for Metro as to how to counter the free-scoring West.

Adelaide University vs Adelaide Comets
Venue: West Beach Parks Football Centre
Date: Friday 10 July 6:15 PM

Uni and Comets currently prop up the WNPLSA table with just one point between them, presenting a crucial opportunity for both sides to register their first win of the season.

Both were on the receiving end of 1-0 losses last week and have scored and conceded the same number of goals, with Comets’ first-round draw with NTC the only thing separating the sides at this stage.

However, Uni and Comets would have each taken positives from their performances against strong-starting teams and eye off tonight’s match-up as a must-win to get the season back on track.

Adelaide City vs Football SA NTC
Venue: Valo Football Centre
Date: Friday 10 July 8:15 PM

Adelaide City were the entertainers in an otherwise quiet week for the scorekeepers and will be looking to continue their hot streak against NTC tonight.

City certainly stood out with an eight next to their name in their dismantling of the previously unbeaten Inter, with Chelsie Dawber again the chief destroyer with four goals to add to her brace the previous week.

The win sent them clear of West and Metro on goal difference at the top of the table and marked their third consecutive win hitting five or more goals past their opposition.

NTC, meanwhile, edged past Fulham with a first-half strike by Kahl Adam to claim their first win of the season and much-needed confidence going into their match with the ladder leaders.

Fulham United vs Salisbury Inter
Venue: West Beach Parks Football Centre
Date: Friday 10 July 8:15 PM

Inter enter this match with a point to prove after an 8-1 demolition at the hands of City last week, facing up against another side looking to get back on the winner’s board.

The eight goals Inter conceded in their previous match accounts for 80% of their total goals against this season, which they will be hoping is a mere outlier in the context of their season.

Fulham fell to the previously winless NTC last week after grinding out an impressive victory over Metro, highlighting inconsistency in the early stages of this season.

There is no doubt that Inter will be more motivated than ever after their poor showing and will take that into the match while beating a fired up Inter side would serve as an impressive achievement for Fulham.
