Title race blown open | RAA Round 9 Goals Wrap

A late winner saw Campbelltown City edge out ladder leaders Adelaide Comets in a five-goal thriller at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre on Saturday.

Both sides were left smarting after heavy losses last week, with Comets suffering a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of lowly Adelaide United and Campbelltown on the receiving end of a 5-1 thrashing by MetroStars.

City got themselves off to the perfect start, with Joshua Barresi and Blake Carpenter both bundling home from close range to hand the hosts a 2-0 lead after just eight minutes.

Comets skipper Allan Welsh dragged his side back into the contest by converting from the penalty spot deep into first-half injury time to halve the deficit just before the break.

The visitors restored parity early in the second half as Ninko Beric played in Lansana Smith, whose shot rifled into the top corner from outside the box to make it 2-2.

It looked as though the spoils would be shared between the two title challengers, but City striker Marc Marino pounced on a loose ball in the box and found the back of the net via the keeper to seal a 3-2 win for his side.

Croydon Kings were triumphant over Adelaide City in an entertaining match that finished 3-2, while Adelaide United made it back-to-back 4-0 wins over Para Hills Knights.

Cumberland United and Adelaide Olympic edged out Modbury Jets and Adelaide Blue Eagles respectively by one goal and Raiders and MetroStars played out a 1-1 draw.
