Vale Steve Maxwell

Football SA is saddened to hear of the recent passing of Steve Maxwell, a much-loved and respected member of the South Australian Football.

Born in North Adelaide, South Australia, ‘Maxi’ is a member of Football South Australia’s Hall of Fame and Player Life Member, for his long-standing commitment to the game and well-respected member of the community as both a player and coach.

As a player, he won 3 NSL Championship medals and 2 NSL Cup medals with Adelaide City. He played 321 NSL and Cup games between 1983 and 1994 scoring 82 goals of which 297 games and 77 goals were for Adelaide City. He also won State League Championship medals with W.T. Birkalla 1981 and Cumberland Utd in 1997.

Maxwell’s ability to find the back of the net was evident, as top goal scorer for Adelaide City (NSL) on 5 occasions, the top goal scorer in Premier League for Port Lion 1995 and Cumberland Utd 1997.

Maxwell was the Socceroo Cap #339, with a total of four senior international appearances over six years. He first represented Australia at the age of 23, making his debut against Czechoslovakia on 6 August 1986 for the senior men’s national team.

Following his retirement he remained in and around the sport as a coach at several levels.

Football SA sends its condolences to those closest to Steve during this time.
