WNPL Preview | Round 19

Adelaide City FC vs Adelaide University
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: 2/08/2019 08:15 PM

It’s as simple as getting a point and they win the Premiership for their first time in WNPL history. City will be out in force tonight at VALO when they look to secure the premiership title. With the trophy in sight, will City slip up and endure their 3rd loss of the season to give the premiership race a fresh twist?

Adelaide Uni will be out to ensure that the Oakden side keep the champagne bottle chilled for another week and ensure that they themselves edge closer to their first finals birth since 2017. Uni have showed their strength in recent weeks being undefeated, having not lost a match since Mid-June when they last played City…

Having Dawber upfront for City who has scored more goals herself this year than Adelaide Comets (16), FFSA NTC (19) and Adelaide University (24), Uni goalkeeper, Evelyn Goldsmith will be sure to have her hands busy down back to help Uni perhaps score against the run of play if they look for a win tonight.

FFSA NTC vs Metro United WFC
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: 2/08/2019 06:15 PM

FFSA NTC come back to the WNPL after a week away in Canberra for the NTC challenge. This match proves vital for both clubs with Metro fighting for a finals spot, and NTC fighting to not face relegation. Expect a bit of roughness in this do or die clash both clubs have it all to play for.

A win for Metro tonight can see them climb back into top 4 and keep their finals dream alive. Coach Tony Scalzi would love to forget the last 5 weeks, where they have lost 5 consecutive games, only scoring 1 goal since Mid-June. Their last win was in Round 14 when they played NTC so they will be hoping history repeats itself when they face the young squad in the opening match at VALO.

Metro Goalkeeper, Hunter Strudwick will be on the mark from kick-off tonight as she will not want to concede another Ella Tonkin goal within 10 seconds that’s for sure!

West Adelaide vs Salisbury Inter
Venue: West Beach Parks Football Centre
Date: 2/08/2019 08:00 PM

Match of the round sees 2nd play host to 3rd on the table as West tackle on Salisbury Inter. A win for both sides is crucial as they both look towards a top two finish. West are more inclined to claim their 6th straight win against Inter and keep a chance of claiming the premiership if Adelaide City lose against Uni.

West have guaranteed themselves a top 3 finish for 2019 and are looking towards the finals series to redeem themselves after the first loss to City this year, last week. Inter however will look to secure another win, which will see them have one foot in finals, something the club has never achieved in their WNPL history. A win against West Adelaide will also see them close the gap to the second placed side to 5 points, with 2 matches to play after this round, and a small hint at taking that second spot to earn a double life in the final’s series.

West Adelaide will look towards their star forwards such as Macri to ensure they score their 14th victory of the season and keep that title race alive. With star goalkeeper Sarah Willacy out with injury for the remainder of the regular season, Izabel Czechowicz will be nervous in goal when she faces a one on one with Matildas star Emily Condon. Or will the adrenalin get to her and pull off “save of the season”? Get to West Beach tonight and find out!

West Adelaide line-up: Justine Hall, 2. Elena Psaroulis (C), 3. Sevanah Pantelis, 4. Abby Touchette, 8. Georgia Macri, 11. Emily Hodgson, 12. Nicole Tilley, 14. Katerina Mattheou, 15. Fulham United vs Adelaide Comets
Venue: West Beach Parks Football Centre
Date: 2/08/2019 06:15 PM

Fulham United welcome back their keeper, Matilda Comley this week for another do or die clash after she has been travelling the world for 5 weeks. Having not played since the Queen’s Birthday weekend, Comley will be out to show her fellow teammates and coach that she still is in form and will help her side remain in the WNPL for season 2020.

Adelaide Comets look to remain in the WNPL also, with this game proving to be a crucial one and a must win for the WNPL debutants. A win for the Comets will see them climb into 6th spot until Monday when Fulham play their catch-up fixture v FFSA NTC. Mansueto’s side will look to star players Victoria Mansueto and Georgie Nicola for a much needed win.

7 of the 11 losses for the Ellis Park side have been by only 1 goal with the squad unable to capatilise on the 1%’s which may prove vital come the end of the season.
