WNPLSA Preview | Round 19

Fulham United vs Salisbury Inter
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 17 September, 6:15 PM

Round 19 kicks off tonight under lights at VALO with bottom of the table Fulham taking on a dominant Inter outfit who have reclaimed top spot.

Fulham endured another tough defeat last weekend, this time a 3-0 loss at the hands of Comets, to leave them rooted to the bottom of the ladder and with consecutive losses after impressive back-to-back wins.

Inter have started to hit imperious form, backing up their 4-1 thumping of West with a 5-0 demolition of Uni in mid-week, with Mina Nishitani’s long-range free kick and excellent strikes by Emily Condon and Erin Hood capping a five-star performance.

Fulham have their sights set on Uni in seventh and have three matches left to avoid the wooden spoon, while Inter have locked in a top-two finish and are gunning for the minor premiership.

Football SA NTC vs Adelaide City
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 17 September, 8:15 PM

The second match of tonight’s double header pits two of the league’s finals contenders against one another as they both aim for a big three points.

NTC edged out Uni in a gritty 1-0 victory thanks to Ella Tonkin’s powerful first-half header, a result that saw them slash their deficit on Metro, and by extension the top four, to a solitary point with three rounds to go.

The Black and Whites took a significant step towards locking in finals football for 2021 as they eased to a 3-0 victory over Metro in their Grand Final rematch, with Daniela Di Bartolo’s clever finish from a tight angle the highlight on a good night for City.

If results go their way, NTC could move into the top four with a win tonight, while City would secure a finals berth should they take three points from the match and begin to prepare for a knockout match in a few weeks’ time.

Adelaide Comets vs Adelaide University
Venue: SA Athletics Stadium
Date: Saturday 18 September, 5:00 PM

There’s plenty on the line for the hosts tomorrow night, with finals still on Comets’ minds, as they take on Uni for a shot at an important win.

Comets inched closer to the top four with a big 3-0 victory over Fulham, with skipper Valeria Guajardo’s outside of the boot flick into the corner pairing nicely with both her and Nanako Sasaki’s thumping finishes to move within five points of Metro.

Uni, meanwhile, have endured a tough week; they were narrowly beaten at the weekend by NTC in a match that finished 1-0 and were thrashed 5-0 by Inter in mid-week, preventing them from increasing their points advantage on fellow cellar-dwellers Fulham.

A victory to Comets would keep them in the hunt for what seemed like an unlikely fourth-place finish just a few weeks ago, while Uni are still hoping to avoid the wooden spoon and must pick up points to help them do so.

Adelaide Comets line-up: 1. Claudia Jenkins (GK), 3. Chantelle Reed, 4. Emily Gale, 7. Valeria Guajardo (C), 10. Esther M Heywood-smith, 13. Elyse Moon, 14. Pirrie Weeks, 16. Inana Toovey, 19. West Adelaide vs Metro United
Venue: TK Shutter Reserve
Date: Saturday 18 September, 5:15 PM

The newly ousted former leaders enter tomorrow night’s match with a point to prove against a side in the midst of a heated battle for finals football.

It was a weekend to forget for West, as they were torn apart by Inter in a 4-1 loss that, combined with their rivals’ win in mid-week, saw their six-point lead at the top of the table evaporate.

Metro saw their grip on a spot in the top four loosen last weekend as they lost 3-0 to City which, coupled with NTC’s victory, means they only sit one point ahead of the chasing pack in the bottom half.

While goal difference may be beyond them, West can still reclaim first place should Inter slip up and will need to pick up points to capitalise, while Metro are now in danger of dropping out of the top four entirely with NTC hot on their heels.

West Adelaide line-up: Khatima Sultani, Georgie Nicola, Nicole Tilley, Erin Murphy, 2. Emily Hodgson, 3. Alison Atkins, 5. Christie Hillyer, 6. Elena Psaroulis, 9. Harriet Burnett, 11.
