IWD2022 marked with biggest ever female coaching course

The SA football family celebrated International Women's Day 2022 with the largest ever female-only coaching course in Australia taking place at West Beach Parks Football Centre on Tuesday evening.

The MiniRoos Course, run by Football Australia Junior Programs Officer Matt Bennet and Football SA Participation Officer, Tiarn Powell, was delivered to 46 female coaches, the majority of who plays for the Adelaide Jaguars.

The 3-hour course is 50% practical and encourages the coach to develop practices that are based on FUN. The emphasis is on natural development i.e. learning by PLAYING football. No coaching but organising FUN football exercises is the key to helping players build a love for the game. Another highlight of the course is that the coaches are exposed to basic rules of the game as well as tips and hints on building a football culture in a completely practical setting.

Adelaide United Women's goalkeeper Annalee Grove was also in attendance.

What a wonderful evening. Holding a female only course on International Women’s day was a very powerful statement on how far we have come in the women’s game. Empowering female coaches influences social change and breaks down barriers to forge a coaching pathway from grassroots to the elite.

Matt Bennett said:

I am extremely proud to have been invited to be a part of this event. A potentially record breaking number of female candidates shows just how far we have come. But there is still work to do. It is our aim to empower, encourage and develop, not only female coaches, but female coach educators who can teach and inspire the next generation. Bravo girls!

The course comes a day after the football family celebrated 500 Days To Go until the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™. This course is the first of many to fall in line as part of our Legacy Plan for the upcoming World Cup.
